What this series is
Every month we publish a snapshot of what a builder's AI stack costs. Not rumors, not leaks, not "this tool might raise prices soon" speculation — just the current sticker prices of the tools indie hackers and vibe coders actually pay for, organized so you can sanity-check your own spend.
A few ground rules for the series. First, this is a snapshot, not a changelog. We are not claiming any specific tool raised or cut prices this month unless we have verified it. Second, every price we cite is the standard individual plan, billed monthly, in USD. Annual-equivalent rates are called out separately. Third, all of these tools live in our pricing database with per-tool breakdowns, so if you want the detail on any single one, it is already in the AI tool pricing guide and the individual pricing pages.
Why bother? Because AI tool pricing moves quietly. Vendors ship new tiers, rename plans, and adjust credit limits between your renewal dates. A monthly reference point makes it easy to notice when your stack drifts from what you thought you were paying.
The anchor: the $20/month cluster
The center of gravity in AI tool pricing is still $20 per month. As of August 2026, all of these sit at or within a cent of that mark:
- ChatGPT Plus — $20/mo. The default general-purpose assistant. GPT access, image generation, Custom GPTs.
- Claude Pro — $20/mo. Long-context assistant with Claude Code included for terminal-based agentic coding.
- Cursor Pro — $20/mo. The AI-native editor most vibe coders open first. Tab completions, Composer, codebase chat.
- v0 Premium — $20/mo. Vercel's generator for React and Next.js components and pages.
- Perplexity Pro — $20/mo. AI search with cited answers. The research layer for a lot of stacks.
- Gemini Advanced — $19.99/mo. Google's assistant with Workspace integration and a 1M token context window.
Six tools, one price point. That convergence matters for budgeting: if you carry two tools from this cluster, you are at $40/mo before anything else. Three puts you at $60. The $20 anchor is also the psychological line vendors defend — budget tiers undercut it, premium tiers sit just above it.
The budget tier: $5-10/month
The cheapest paid AI tools are not toys. Several of them are daily drivers for specific jobs:
- ElevenLabs Starter — $6/mo. AI voice generation. One of the cheapest paid plans in our entire database.
- GitHub Copilot Pro — $10/mo. AI completions inside VS Code, JetBrains, and Neovim. Still the cheapest way to get AI in your editor.
- Midjourney Basic — $10/mo. Image generation for UI mockups, landing page assets, and marketing visuals.
- Suno Pro — $10/mo. AI music generation for product demos, videos, and content.
Windsurf Pro moved to $20/mo in March 2026, matching Cursor exactly — the budget-editor discount is gone. Runway Standard at $15/mo still holds the mid-spot for AI video.
The budget tier is where stacks grow quietly. A $5 here and a $10 there do not feel like decisions, but four budget subscriptions equal one anchor-tier tool. Track them with the same seriousness.
The premium tier: $24-30/month
Above the $20 anchor sits a tier of tools that charge more because they automate work rather than assist with it:
- SuperGrok — $30/mo. xAI's premium assistant tier. The most expensive general assistant in the snapshot.
- Zapier Professional — $29.99/mo. Workflow automation connecting your stack. Not an AI model, but a regular line item in AI-heavy stacks.
- HeyGen Creator — $29/mo. AI avatar video generation for marketing and onboarding content.
- Synthesia Starter — $29/mo. AI video with avatars, aimed at training and explainer content.
- n8n Starter (Cloud) — $24/mo. Self-hostable workflow automation; the cloud starter tier undercuts Zapier by about $6.
Notice the pattern: the premium tier is dominated by automation and media generation, not chat assistants. The closer a tool gets to doing a job end-to-end — producing a finished video, running a finished workflow — the more comfortably it prices above $20.
The annual billing math
Almost every tool in this snapshot offers a discount for paying annually. The savings are real but easy to overestimate, so here is the actual arithmetic on tools from the tiers above:
- Cursor Pro — $20/mo monthly vs $16/mo billed annually. Saves $48/yr.
- ChatGPT Plus — $20/mo vs $16.67/mo annually. Saves about $40/yr.
- Claude Pro — $20/mo vs $16.67/mo annually. Saves about $40/yr.
- GitHub Copilot Pro — $10/mo vs $8.33/mo annually. Saves about $20/yr.
- Midjourney Basic — $10/mo vs $8/mo annually. Saves $24/yr.
- SuperGrok — $30/mo vs $25/mo annually. Saves $60/yr.
- Zapier Professional — $29.99/mo vs $19.99/mo annually. Saves $120/yr.
A typical three-tool stack — Cursor, ChatGPT, and Midjourney — saves roughly $112 per year on annual billing. That is real money, but the trade-off is commitment. An annual plan for a tool you stop using in month four is a sunk cost, not a saving. Go annual on tools you have already used for a full billing cycle and know you will keep. Stay monthly on anything you are still evaluating.
Watch for overlap, not just price
The biggest leak in an AI stack is rarely a price increase. It is paying for two tools in the same category. The snapshot above makes the categories obvious: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Perplexity Pro, and Gemini Advanced are all general assistants at ~$20. Cursor Pro, Windsurf Pro, and GitHub Copilot all put AI completions in your editor. HeyGen and Synthesia both generate avatar videos at $29.
Two overlapping subscriptions at $20/mo is $240/yr spent on redundant capability. That is more than any annual-billing discount in this post will ever save you. Pricing tiers tell you what tools cost. Categories tell you what you are paying for twice. The second number is the one that saves money.
